Why do Vegans Get A Bad Reputation and Why do People Hate Them so Much?
Today, I’m going to talk about vegans and talk a little bit on why people hate vegans, the reasons people could hate vegans.
Honestly speaking, if I had to answer that question, I would have to say that the main culprit is one word. Media. Mainstream media is a powerful thing. It can really make or break someone’s perception of something and how they view something.
Like take Muslims and Islam. There has been a history of Islamophobia throughout history. But that hatred intensified after the events of 9/11 and what happened at the Twin Towers. They are now generalised as “terrorists” when it’s not true. People who don’t know a Muslim person personally would make such generalisations.
Same with vegans. Media portrays them as these annoying vegans. Vegans who force their diet upon others. People who shame non vegan people. Guilt trip. Harassing people, specifically non vegans. Amongst other things. So people who see all of this and not know a vegan personally start to have an image of all vegans, a perception of vegans based on what they see on mainstream media, when it is not true.
There are vegans who do not care for your diet or what you eat. They will not force their diet on you, even if they disagree with it for their own reasons. Okay? They will not force an agenda onto you. Because they will respect non vegans. Even if they wanted people to go vegan, they won’t do it in a way that is harmful or disrespectful to other people. Because they know that’s not right.
All those “Muslims” and “vegans” that you see on the mainstream media is one thing. Extremists. They tarnish the name of the people or groups of people they are supposedly representing. They do not represent and is not representative of all people who are a part of the group or faith that they follow.
My solution? To go out there. To go meet different people. Understand them better. That way misunderstandings, generalisations and stereotypes can be prevented. Don’t trust everything you see on television.
I actually feel sorry for people who believe everything that they see on the Internet, television and mainstream media. They believe that it is the truth, living a lie without actually seeking the true truth, in a way. It’s rather sad, really. I hope the world changes for the better.
